That it didn’t work out wasn’t entirely a surprise. Now he was coming back to the Daily News to right the ship and to remind us why we had wanted to get into this business in the first place. Here was a writer who had dropped out of high school, worked in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, studied art, and whose steady, rumbling voice helped define what it meant to be a New Yorker. Here was Hamill, the veteran newsman who had put in tabloid tours of duty at the Daily News, the Post and New York Newsday, whose columns were often prose poems that lifted the city and its people. Hamill’s arrival was celebrated as something of a rebirth for staff and readers alike. When he was appointed, just eight months earlier, the paper was still recovering from a long and bitter strike, followed by bankruptcy and a steady slide in readership. In September, 1997, when Pete Hamill, who died on Wednesday, was fired from his job as the editor of the Daily News, the staff took him out to tell him how much his short reign at the newspaper had meant to them.
